Matthew J. Mastrelli Joins SKE
SKE Forensic Consultants would like to welcome Matthew J. Mastrelli as Associate Engineer at SKE. Mr. Mastrelli has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. He is currently studying to obtain his full accreditation as a Traffic Accident Reconstructionist from The Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR).
While attending Penn State University, Mr. Mastrelli acted in a leadership role with Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) as the Electrical Team Leader. He was then elected as the Chief Engineer of the Formula SAE team. In his position as Electrical Team Leader, Mr. Mastrelli was part of a team responsible for building an 80-horsepower formula race car, which included complete design and development. Mr. Mastrelli was responsible for implementing test procedures of the full electrical system. As Chief Engineer, he was responsible for identifying, diagnosing and resolving vehicle issues by running finite element analysis (computer simulations of stress analysis on design components) and overseeing the in-house machining for all components.
Mr. Mastrelli enjoys rebuilding and restoring vehicles in his spare time. Mr. Mastrelli’s experience in rebuilding cars affords him with the knowledge and real-world experience on the performance of vehicles and components in a crash.
Mr. Mastrelli has a wide-range of experience, including a R&D Lab Intern at Patterson Kelly-Harsco Industrial where he was responsible for conducting tests of boiler parts to ensure reliability and longevity. He also owned his own landscaping business for over 10 years, which provided him with experience in which equipment designs worked and performed well, and which do not. Mr. Mastrelli’s broad experience has afforded him the opportunity to observe failures and successful designs in various disciplines, from racing to heavy equipment. Mr. Mastrelli’s hands-on experience has afforded him the opportunity to employ various methods to resolve issues in the field.
Mr. Mastrelli utilizes his engineering education to apply scientific methods when analyzing obstacles and relies on his real-world experience to solve problems. Mr. Mastrelli is ideally suited as a Traffic Accident Reconstructionist due to his experience in problem-solving, along with his strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering, providing an excellent fit at SKE Forensic Consultants. In the short time that Mr. Mastrelli has been with SKE, he has played an active role in upgrading corporate vehicles with new test equipment for heavy vehicles. He also obtained his commercial UAV license and is an FAA certified drone pilot.

In the absence of representative crash test data, SKE utilized a high precision force gauge and Car-O-Liner Benchrack structural frame alignment equipment to measure the force required to damage the rear bumper of this surrogate Jeep. The data was then used by SKE’s engineers to determine the severity of the crash and to determine what the occupants of the vehicle would have experienced during the crash.Read more

SKE Forensic Consultants, Inc. is pleased to announce that Kevin S. Tully is now a partner with the firm. Mr. Tully will be replacing one of SKE’s founding partners, John G. Karpovich, who has retired as partner of SKE and relocated to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mr. Tully has over 20 years of expertise in the automotive engineering profession and has established himself as an expert in vehicle mechanical systems as well as accident reconstruction. Mr. Tully will become the project manager for assignments formerly handled by Mr. Karpovich and will be accepting all new assignments. John Karpovich and Kevin Tully attended an Event Data Recording (EDR) Summit in Houston, Texas in March 2018. This annual summit is internationally attended and is the premier source for obtaining current and future information regarding “black box” crash data for vehicles. At this years summit, representatives from Tesla announced that their car company will join many other car manufacturers by allowing the airbag modules in their vehicles to be imaged by companies like SKE for crash data.Read more
Kevin Tully, B.E.Mech.Eng. and Michael DiCicco, B.S.Mech.Eng. attended training on heavy truck air brakes and the latest technology in collision avoidance systems provided by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC. The training provided a deep dive into the functionality of air brake systems which will allow SKE Forensic Consultants to identify deficiencies in a vehicle’s braking system, and more importantly understand how those deficiencies affect the braking performance of the vehicle. The latest technology in heavy trucks includes collision avoidance systems similar to those now included on passenger vehicles. These collision avoidance or collision alert systems store data in the event of a collision which is useful in reconstructing the accident.Read more

SKE Forensic Consultants has extended their coverage of Event Data Recorders (EDRs) to Hyundai and KIA vehicles. While most vehicles and manufacturers are supported by the Bosch CDR system, Hyundai and KIA have each developed their own hardware and software solutions. We now have the ability to download 2010 and later Hyundai and KIA vehicles using the vehicle’s diagnostic port, or if necessary due to vehicle damage, we can download the EDR directly from the airbag control module. Our engineers have already developed special cables specific to the Hyundai and KIA vehicles allowing for enhanced access to the EDR even when the vehicle’s electrical system is compromised.Read more
John Scott and Kevin Tully attended the Crash Data Retrieval Analysis & Applications Update Course instructed by Crash Data Specialists and held by the New York Statewide Traffic Accident Reconstruction Society (NYSTARS). The course included a review of the latest equipment, least intrusive Event Data Recorder (EDR) download methods, latest case studies validating the accuracy of the data, data survivability (burned vehicles crushed control modules, etc.), and the laws and regulations governing the data contained within EDR’s.
SKE congratulates associate Mike DiCicco for becoming a board certified traffic crash reconstructionist by successfully passing a comprehensive exam offered by the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR).Read more
